How to choose which Federal Tax Withholding Table to use.


For employees who filed the pre-2020 W-4 form, use: Federal – Single (old W-4) for Single or Married filing Separately; Federal – Married (old W-4) for Married filing Jointly.

For employees who file the new 2020 W-4 form and the box in Step 2 of Form W-4 is checked, use: Federal – Single (2020 W-4, Box Checked) for Single or Married filing Separately; Federal – Married, Filing Jointly (2020 W-4, Box Checked); or Federal – Head of household (2020 W-4, Box Checked) for those who qualify as Head of Household.

For employees who file the new 2020 W-4 for and the box in Step 2 of Form W-4 is Not Checked, use: Federal – Single (2020 W-4, Box UnChecked) for Single or Married filing Separately; Federal – Married, Filing Jointly (2020 W-4, Box UnChecked); or Federal–Head of household (2020 W-4, Box UnChecked) for those who qualify as Head of Household.

Only employees hired after December 31, 2019 are required to file the 2020 W-4 form.
